Time to pull out the book "Interrupting Chicken" and change the name to "Interrupting Rooster"!
Here's a link to the story on youtube if you don't know it:
Interrupting Chicken
If you do have animals in your room for studying life cycles, such as tadpoles, caterpillars, or chicken, why not use them for early finisher tasks? In our room, they become a drawing center for those finished their work. It involves no prep for me, and it's a great way for students to study detail, label pictures, or notice things that will provoke discussion. These poor hens were scolded regularly for moving around so much while they are supposed to just hold still, but the pictures were adorable.
If you don't have any class animals to draw, you could try directed drawing instead - still no prep, and really engaging if there are step-by-step drawing directions.
