Hello everyone!
Last week we were busy preparing our portfolios for 3-Way conferencing. This included anything students wanted to "show off" to parents, as well as some self-assessment and personal reflection writing. The latter are always big points of interest for parents and myself. We also completed our science booklets, which consist of all the writing done during our Friday experiments! We tested flying tubes, made oobleck, made things explode...the usual!
OObleck
Just mix a little bit of corn starch and water and you have such a great teaching tool! Both a solid and a liquid, depending on how to hold it. It you squeeze it tightly, it's solid and chalky. If you let it rest in your hand and warm up, it oozes out as a liquid.
Conferencing With Parents
Part of our student-led teacer conferences will be "teaching" our parents something that we've learned. Several students will be using a place value game to show their skills - I use it for assessment!
Partner #1 chooses a handful of base ten blocks.
Partner #2 colors in the box with that number.
Switch! That's it! It's a great little game to teach parents because they can do it at home to reinforce the concept.
Self-Regulation
Socially, we are working on self-regulation and how to appropriately deal with emotions that arise when people annoy you. Sometimes we ignore it. Sometimes we kindly explain and ask them to stop. One little girl decided to write a note to the boy who sits beside her.
It says "You're driving me crazy but I can handle it." That works!

Freebie Time!
My students love this stained glass style of coloring sheet for seasonal holidays! The thick black lines allow for success even for my students with fine motor issues - they are so proud! When they are done, we rub a small bit of oil over them to make them translucent. They are mesmerizing when hung on the windows for Easter! Grab your free copy HERE and enjoy!
That place value game is so simple yet such great practice. Great idea!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the easter colouring page. It is super cute.
ReplyDeleteHi Susanna,
ReplyDeleteI love that Easter colouring page! Thanks so much. I also liked your place value game idea. I can already think of a differentiation for it: the higher level students can create an actual image with the colored boxes. That way, the student would have to give the "correct" number for the box to be filled in to create the image. The students could try and discuss and image. Too fun! Thanks and happy weekend friend!

The Write Stuff Teaching
Thank you for the coloring page! We'll rub veggie oil on top to make it look like stained glass! Happy weekend, Susanna!
ReplyDeleteOH I love that coloring page. I am going to copy Sandy and use her magic oil trick to make it look like stained glass. :) The little note may have been my favorite thing... you should make copies of that into a notepad and sell them- because how many people would you love to say that to?! :) Have a great week!
