Math Centers and Mona Lisa

This week's math centers were all open ended and students were encouraged to challenge themselves! For example, we made GIANT hundreds charts, and some students just kept on going well past 300! They were excited to take them home to hang in their rooms, so I sent home a list of activities for home practice as well.  We also chopped up hundreds charts to re-assemble like a puzzle; if you want to try this I'd suggest color coding each one so they don't get mixed up. Each day we also listed "Ways to Make..." a different number. My gifted student really ran with this idea!

Our main study in math was geometry, specifically polygons. Students traced our pattern blocks and cut out the shapes. After we used them for sorting and patterning, students made picture with them on black paper.

We did lots of art this week! I made "drawing journals" for the kids to keep in their desks. We do one directed drawing each week, then they get to practice it a few more times when they have extra time. This week we drew owls!

This week in Art History For Little Ones, it was Leonardo Da Vinci week! We studied all about his inventions and mirror-writing in secret journals, and of course the Mona Lisa!

Here are some of their pictures using pastels.

One more idea to share!  We celebrated Hundreds Day by making a class poster! Lots of math happened while we figured out how many cats each student would make to get to 100, and once we had 38, how many more we'd need. Students also figured out a way to keep track of the cats they had counted - they put a bingo chip on each one so they wouldn't count it twice.

Thanks for stopping by!

  2. OK- I feel like you must have 10 days in your week compared to mine! You do SO much! AND I also feel like your kids are SO lucky to have your artistic talent to learn from. I am always apologizing to my kids and telling them to NOT tell the art teacher what my illustrations look like! :)
    Have a great weekend!

  3. I really like the idea of the art journals. I think they'd love to perfect their lesson when they have free time. Great idea and great lessons. Thanks for always sharing and I agree with Carolyn, they are so lucky to have you! Wonderful post!

  4. Pattern block art is always a big hit with my math unit too. It is such a fun way to incorporate geometry and art. Thanks for sharing.

  5. Love that you teach art history! Leonardo Da Vinci has always been my favorite. It might just be the scientist in me though. Science and art are very related! Love!
