African Masks, Sight Word Caterpillars, Class Library Organization, and Free Heart Graphics

African Masks Art
This week in Art History For Little Ones we explored African Art. This is one of the most popular projects in the whole unit: 3D African Masks. This year I had feathers, stickers, glitter, wool, and just about anything else you can think of. I think they turned out great!

Class Library Organization
Do you have a system for organizing your classroom library? I like to put a number sticker on every book  matches the number of its basket. That way if a book is on the floor, we know exactly where it goes. Each student in charge of one basket; after shared reading, they go to "their" basket to quickly sort through to make sure all the numbers are right. If not, they put it in the correct basket. No more messy book baskets! Here they are busy at work sorting...

Sight Words
How do you encourage students to practice sight words at home? One thing we do is make each student a sight word caterpillar to put up in their bedroom! As they learn the words, they put another word up until it stretches all along their room. So many kids tell me about reading it as they fall asleep at night!

Valentines day is getting closer! If you need some Valentines Day Graphics, you can use these - they're free!

  2. Love the math game and the idea for the kiddos for being in charge of your book baskets. I've labeled my baskets and coordinating books and that has greatly decreased the mess, but I love the idea of putting the cleaning back on the kids!

  3. Hi Susanna,

I remember making those African masks a few times but I needed a video to teach me how to teach the kids! Yours look amazing. You must have read my mind because my reading baskets are a mess and I had to speak to the students about it. I really need a Plan B and I love your idea about assigning the students to a basket. Thanks so much. I'm going to have to check out that Math website.
